Exploring the Mission and Ministry of Chet Lowe

What does it mean to live a life centered around religion, service, and a “willingness to go to the farthest corners of the earth?” Those words encapsulated Chet Lowe’s calling to ministry at a very young age. Chet began his ministry “at the age of seven by sponsoring and operating a Vacation Bible School in the family garage.” Chet was brought up as a Christian in the Bahamas in a home that sought to instill in him practical piety, kindness, and service.

His view of service broadened around the world as a teenager. At thirteen, he went to South Korea with a youth mission team to help build a church. This year, he went to Liberia to build a school. These missions strengthened his belief that Christian service need not be confined to a familiar neighborhood.

But when Pastor Chet Lowe married Andrea in 1994, he entered one of the most important stages of his life. During the 1995 civil conflict, he and his wife moved to Liberia. His mission there included both church planting and humanitarian assistance.

While in Liberia, they helped plant seventeen churches and established Joseph’s Brethren, a ministry that supports boys and girls impacted by the war, including former child soldiers. After three years, an estimated 1500 children were put in foster care and rehabilitation programs based on biographical data.

Lowe’s present approach to ministry is based on the notion of faith expressed in service. Rather than restricting any ministry to preaching and church, Lowe has always stressed the need of relational service discipleship and the taking of one into another’s life in the midst of life-altering disaster.

Following their return to the United States, Pastor Chet Lowe was employed at Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale. Missions, foster care, and counseling ministries for singles, couples, and single parents were some of his duties. The preacher also obtained a Master of Christian Counseling degree.

Later, in 2005, he established Patmos: Reality Discipleship, a young adult discipleship program. It eventually made its way to Florida, California, the Bahamas, Brazil, and El Salvador, among other locations.

In his book Living Parable, author Chet Lowe makes the claim that everyday situations can demonstrate and personify a person’s faith. A similar premise underpins his all-encompassing ministry: a person can talk about spiritual issues through their own preferences, friendships, peace, and support.

For over 26 years, Chet has been an effective pastor, director of global missions, counselor, disciplinarian, and community builder. Serving others has always been at the core of his life, from his early ministry in the Bahamas to his current ministry in California.
